ENGINEERINGNET.EU -- The collaboration includes the development of accelerator driven systems such as MYRRHA and the performance of material tests.

This cooperation agreement will be signed on Wednesday 4 January in the presence of H.E. the ambassador of Japan in Belgium, Mr. Jun Yokota.

In 2006 a first formal cooperation agreement was concluded and will now be renewed for another 5 years. JAEA and SCK-CEN will work intensively together within three fields.

A first topic concerns the research in the development of accelerator driven nuclear systems (ADS) in which both parties are involved: SCK-CEN in the frame of the MYRRHA project.

They will combine their forces for the design of such ADS installations, materials studies and the use of lead-bismuth as a cooling for research reactors.

Furthermore both companies have decided in the future to use their research reactors for common projects. The accent is on the implementation of advanced materials testing such as the MIKADO project in which the properties of reactor materials are being tested.

Besides the pursue of a number of existing projects, new programs have also been set up. For that purpose SCK•CEN's Belgian reactor 2 (BR2) as well as Japanese research reactors are involved.

Finally, the collaboration will continue regarding the decommissioning and dismantling of nuclear installations. Thanks to the dismantling experience of the BR3 reactor in Mol, the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre owns a unique expertise on that area.
