More than three quarters of drivers now see battery charging as a preventative rather than distress activity, reports CTEK.

ENGINEERINGNET.EU - A recent survey undertaken by leading smart battery charger provider, CTEK, has revealed that 84 per cent of drivers now view charging their batteries as a preventive measure rather than a distress activity, indicating an increasing awareness of the advantages of regularly charging and conditioning car batteries.

A constant increase in luxury and safety technology has meant that modern vehicles in particular place huge amounts of additional strain on their batteries with security features such as tracking devices, alarms and immobilisers, for example, effectively acting as continuous parasitic loads - even when the car isn't running so the battery's charge can't be maintained by the alternator.

As a result, without the correct maintenance procedures, battery failure can happen quickly and unexpectedly.

Jan-ulf Soderberg, Head of Brand and Marketing at CTEK, commented: “Battery protection is undoubtedly essential but until very recently, battery charging was viewed by the majority of motorists as a task only undertaken when their vehicles wouldn't start.”

“However our survey, which questioned 1,114 people, has revealed that attitudes are fast changing with well over 900 respondents stating that they now charge as a preventative measure.”

“This 'act before it's too late' mentality is great news and could save motorists money on premature replacements as well as the inconvenience caused by a flat battery.”

Regularly charging and conditioning can extend battery life by as much as 300% and, it's a much easier task than many perceive it to be.

Jan continued: “All CTEK chargers are spark proof and reverse polarity protected to protect not only the user but also the vehicles sensitive electronics. What's more, it doesn't matter whether the negative leads are attached to the positive terminals and vice versa.”
