ENGINEERINGNET.EU -- This light-rail contract also includes the planning of construction and track work for the city’s public transport authority, Storstockholms Lokaltrafik and the redevelopment of tram stops.

The work on engineering plans has already started. The new line is scheduled to open at the end of 2014 when new trams will be put into service.

The current 9-kilometre tramline from Stockholm to Lidingö opened in 1914. At present, the area served by the line is one of the fastest growing in Sweden.

Forecasts indicate an increase of close to half a million inhabitants in the Stockholm area by 2030. The existing single track line also uses the Lidingö Bridge and has been in need of repair for some time.

Leif Bertilsson, country managing director in Sweden, says: ‘We are very pleased to have won this contract for redevelopment of the section from the beginning of the bridge to the end of the line at the most eastern part of Lidingö. It enables us to use our existing expertise in light-rail to help our client increase capacity, reduce delays and shorten travelling times.’

In all countries, they involved in similar light-rail projects.

For example the Belgian Company is involved in a light-rail study in Belgian Limburg (Spartacus), tramline extensions as part of Antwerp Masterplan, the redesign of tram and metro depots in Brussels (Marconi, Erasmus and Delta) and the tramline number 9 that will connect the Simonis to the UZ Brussels stop.
